🚙 The Road Trip Blueprint
The 7 Day Altay Road Trip:
Navigating Xinjiang’s Vast and Wild Frontier
Most generic travel blogs will cheerfully tell you to "Visit Kanas Lake and Hemu Village!" while completely failing to mention that they are hundreds of kilometers apart, separated by winding mountain passes and heavily monitored police checkpoints. Xinjiang is incomprehensibly massive. If you try to wing your transportation here, you will spend half your trip exhausted in a bus terminal. Here is the ultimate 7 Day Altay road trip itinerary, fully decoded.

🛑 Reality Check: The Distance Nightmare
Look at a map. Xinjiang makes up one sixth of China's entire landmass. The drive from the regional capital (Urumqi) to Kanas Lake is a soul crushing 12 to 14 hours. You cannot do Altay as a quick weekend trip. You must fly directly into the Altay region, commit at least 6 to 7 days, and accept that you will be in a vehicle for 3 to 5 hours almost every single day.
✈️ Phase 1: The Airport Dilemma
Choosing the right airport dictates your entire route. Do not fly into Urumqi and attempt to drive.
🏙️
Altay City Airport (AAT)
The Best Option: Connect through Urumqi, Beijing, or Xi'an and fly directly into Altay City (AAT). This positions you perfectly to start the "Northern Loop" clockwise. Flights are reliable year-round.
🏔️
Kanas Airport (KJI)
The Risky Option: This tiny airport is practically inside the nature reserve. It saves you 4 hours of driving, but flights are notoriously erratic, very expensive, and frequently canceled due to mountain weather.
Why "Bao Che" (包车) is Mandatory for Foreigners
Foreigners are legally allowed to rent cars in China (with a temporary permit), but doing it in Xinjiang is a terrible idea. The roads are intense, mountain weather shifts rapidly, and the police checkpoints require complex navigation.
Instead, you must hire a Bao Che (包车 / Private Driver). For about ¥800 to ¥1,200 RMB ($110-$165) per day, you get an SUV and a local Kazakh or Han driver who knows the roads, handles the police checkpoint translations for your passport, and acts as a localized fixer. It splits perfectly between 2 - 4 travelers.
🗺️ Phase 2: The 7-Day Northern Loop
This route creates the "Golden Triangle": Altay City → Burqin → Kanas/Hemu → Altay City.
1
Day 1: Arrival in Altay City & Provisions
Fly into Altay City (AAT). Meet your Bao Che driver. Spend the afternoon stocking up on snacks, water, and altitude sickness meds (if needed) at a local supermarket. Altay City is your last chance for cheap, standardized goods before entering the expensive tourist zones. Eat a massive plate of local Da Pan Ji (Big Plate Chicken) for dinner.
2
Day 2: The Drive to Burqin & Five Color Beach
Drive Time: 2.5 Hours. Head west to the county of Burqin. Stop at the Five Color Beach (Wucaitan) just before sunset. The strange, wind eroded rock formations turn vibrant shades of red, purple, and gold against the Irtysh River. Sleep in Burqin and visit the night market for famous cold-water grilled fish.
3
Day 3: Entering the Kanas Nature Reserve
Drive Time: 3 Hours. Leave Burqin early and drive up the winding mountain roads to Jiadengyu, the massive gateway town for Kanas. Here, your private driver must park. You will take your luggage and board the mandatory park shuttle bus deep into the Kanas Lake scenic area. Spend the afternoon hiking the Three Bays (Dragon Bay, Moon Bay, Fairy Bay).
4
Day 4: Guanyin Pavilion & The Transfer
Wake up early to climb the 1,000+ wooden steps to the Guanyin Pavilion (Fish Viewing Pavilion) for a panoramic view of Kanas Lake. In the afternoon, take the shuttle bus back out to Jiadengyu, reunite with your driver, and drive 2 hours east to the entrance of Hemu Village.
5
Day 5: Hemu Village (The Nomad Dream)
Hemu is a traditional Tuva and Kazakh village filled with log cabins. The absolute highlight is waking up before dawn and hiking up the viewing platform hill to watch the morning mist rise over the wooden roofs as the sun breaks over the mountains. Spend the day horseback riding through the birch forests.
6
Day 6: The Long Road Back to Altay City
Drive Time: 5 to 6 Hours. Say goodbye to the mountains. This is a heavy driving day to complete the loop. You will traverse stunning high-altitude grasslands back to Altay City. Rest, recover, and enjoy a modern hotel room with strong water pressure.
7
Day 7: Departure
Catch your morning flight out of Altay City (AAT) back to Urumqi or your onward destination in mainland China.

❓ Altay Logistics FAQ
Where do I find a "Bao Che" private driver?
Do not try to find one on the street. Use Chinese apps like Xiaohongshu (RED) or Trip.com to book registered tourism drivers in advance, or ask your first hotel in Altay City to arrange one for you. Ensure you agree that the daily rate includes the driver's fuel, food, and lodging.
What is the "Southern Loop"?
This itinerary covers the Northern Loop (focused on Kanas/Hemu). The Southern Loop of Xinjiang focuses on the desert regions, Kashgar, and the Pamir Highway. To do both loops requires at least 15 to 20 days. Do not try to combine them in a week.
Are there foreigner approved hotels in Hemu?
Yes. While many small wooden cabins are for domestic tourists only, there are specific, higher-end lodges in Hemu and Kanas that are licensed to take foreign passports. Your Bao Che driver or Trip.com can verify this for you.
