Kanas Lake & Hemu Village:
Decoding the Shuttle Buses and Scenic Tourist Traps
The Kanas Nature Reserve in northern Xinjiang is undeniably stunning, but its ticketing system is a bureaucratic nightmare. You cannot simply rent a car and drive up to the alpine lakes or the wooden cabins of Hemu. Independent travelers are forced into a complex web of mandatory park shuttle buses, sprawling transport hubs, and strict accommodation zones. Do not let the logistics ruin your trip. Here is your step-by-step masterclass on cracking the Kanas code.

🛑 Reality Check: Kanas and Hemu are NOT the Same Place
The biggest mistake tourists make is assuming Kanas Lake and Hemu Village are right next to each other. They are two entirely separate scenic areas located inside one massive reserve. Kanas is focused on the deep alpine lake and forests. Hemu is a traditional Tuva village located in a neighboring river valley. While they share a ticketing ecosystem, they require entirely different shuttle bus routes to reach. You cannot easily see both in a single afternoon.
🚌 The Jiadengyu Bottleneck
To preserve the environment, the government banned all outside vehicles from entering the core scenic areas. You must park your private car (or Bao Che) at a designated hub.
1
What is Jiadengyu (贾登峪)?
Jiadengyu is a massive tourist service town located at the entrance of the Kanas Nature Reserve. It consists almost entirely of parking lots, huge hotels, and ticketing centers. Your driver must drop you off here. From the Jiadengyu ticket center, you will buy your entry tickets and board the official green park shuttle buses.
2
The Shuttle into Kanas Lake
From Jiadengyu, the shuttle bus takes about 1 hour to reach the Kanas Lake Transfer Center (inside the park). Along the way, the bus will stop at the famous "Three Bays" (Dragon Bay, Moon Bay, Fairy Bay). You can hop on and off these buses freely with your ticket.
3
The Shuttle to Hemu Village
To get to Hemu, you can either take a shuttle directly from Jiadengyu (about 1.5 hours) or from a separate Hemu Gate ticketing office if your driver takes you via the mountain highway. Again, you must leave your car behind and take the designated village shuttle.
🛏️ Where to Actually Sleep
The ticketing rules strictly dictate where you should sleep. Here is the breakdown.
| Location | The Pros & Cons |
|---|---|
| Sleeping in Jiadengyu (Outside) |
Pros: Much cheaper hotels. You don't have to carry your luggage onto the shuttle bus. Cons: You are not inside the park. You will miss the morning mist over the lake and will have to queue for the shuttle bus again the next morning. |
| Sleeping in Kanas Old Village (Inside) |
Pros: You wake up inside the reserve. You can hike to the lake before the day-tripper crowds arrive. Cons: Extremely expensive, and finding a "Foreigner-Approved" (涉外) wooden cabin here can be very difficult. |
| Sleeping in Hemu Village (Inside) |
Pros: Mandatory. If you visit Hemu, you must sleep there. The entire appeal of Hemu is watching the sunrise over the cabins. Cons: High prices and commercialized dining. |
💸 Avoiding the Traps & Hacks
🍜
The Overpriced Food Reality
Because all ingredients must be shuttled into Kanas and Hemu, the restaurants inside the scenic areas mark up their prices heavily. A basic bowl of beef noodles can cost 3x the normal price. Hack: Bring self heating hotpots, instant noodles, and snacks from the supermarket in Burqin before you arrive.
🎒
The Luggage Dilemma
Do not bring your massive 25 inch hardcase suitcase onto the Kanas or Hemu shuttle buses. There is very little luggage space, and you will have to drag it over wooden boardwalks. Leave your main suitcase in your Bao Che driver's car at Jiadengyu, and pack a small backpack for your 1-2 nights inside the park.
🎫
The "Two-Day" Ticket Rule
When buying your Kanas entry ticket, always opt for the "Two-Day Pass" (Eri You / 二日游) even if you only plan to stay overnight. It costs marginally more but allows you unlimited access to the shuttle buses on both days.
📸
The Morning Mist Hack
The famous "Fairy Bay" mist in Kanas only occurs between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. If you sleep in Jiadengyu outside the park, the first shuttle bus will not get you there in time. You must book accommodation inside Kanas Old Village to capture the shot.
❓ Logistics FAQ
Can I buy tickets at the gate?
Yes, foreigners must usually buy tickets at the manual ticketing window anyway because Chinese WeChat ticketing mini-programs require a mainland ID card to process online. Bring your physical passport to the ticket window at Jiadengyu.
Is the altitude dangerous?
No. Kanas Lake sits at an elevation of roughly 1,340 meters (4,400 ft), and Hemu is around 1,200 meters. This is well below the threshold for altitude sickness. You do not need canned oxygen like you would in Tibet.
