Skiing China's "Snow Capital":
The Foreigner's Guide to Altay & Koktokay Resorts
Western skiers are exhausted by the skyrocketing prices of the Alps and the massive, hour long lift lines of Niseko, Japan. In response, the global ski community is quietly pivoting to China's northwestern frontier. Altay, Xinjiang, is the undisputed "Snow Capital of China," offering world class powder, heli skiing, and season lengths that defy logic. But navigating the digital lift passes and -25°C logistics requires a playbook. Here is the ultimate 2026 guide to conquering Jiangjun Mountain and Koktokay.

🏔️ Jiangjun Mountain vs. Koktokay
Altay boasts two world class mega resorts, but they cater to entirely different styles of riding.
1
Jiangjun Mountain (The Urban Playground)
Location: Literally inside Altay City.
The Vibe: Jiangjun Mountain is globally unique because it sits right on the edge of the city limits. You can stay in a luxury downtown hotel and take a 10 minute taxi to the gondola. It is famous for its Night Skiing. Watching the sunset turn the sky neon pink while you carve down perfectly groomed runs overlooking the city lights is unparalleled. It’s perfect for intermediate riders and snowboarders who want vibrant après-ski vibes.

2
Koktokay International Ski Resort (The Extreme Frontier)
Location: Fuyun County (3 hours from Altay City).
The Vibe: Koktokay is for serious, high budget powder hounds. Hidden deep in an alpine gorge, the microclimate drops massive amounts of dry powder. The season here is absurdly long, running from October all the way to early May. It features a massive 1,200m vertical drop, sprawling off-piste tree runs, and extensive backcountry terrain. It is remote, rugged, and completely focused on the sport.

📱 Digital Lift Passes & Rentals
In Xinjiang, you cannot just walk up to a wooden ticket booth with a credit card. Everything, from buying your lift pass to renting a Burton snowboard or securing a locker is done through WeChat Mini-Programs. You must have WeChat Pay or Alipay set up and verified with your passport before you arrive. Upon booking through the resort's official mini-program, you will be issued a QR code that you scan at the turnstiles to access the lifts.
🥶 Surviving -25°C Ski Days
The powder in Altay is incredibly light and dry specifically because it is brutally cold. You must adapt your gear.
🥽
Magnetic Face Masks
Exposed skin will suffer frostnip in minutes. You must wear a full balaclava. Buy a modern magnetic ski mask that snaps directly into the bottom of your goggles (like the Anon MFI system) to prevent your breath from freezing on the lens.
🔋
The Battery Death Zone
Your phone is your lift pass. If your battery dies in the cold, you cannot scan onto the gondola. Stick a thermal Nuanbaobao (heating pad) to the back of your phone case and keep it in an inner pocket close to your chest.
🧤
Mittens > Gloves
Standard five-finger ski gloves will not cut it in Koktokay in January. You need heavy-duty, Gore-Tex mittens that keep your fingers together for shared body heat, paired with thin merino wool liners.
🚁
Heli-Skiing Availability
For the ultra-high budget demographic, Altay offers legitimate heli-skiing and snowcat operations dropping you onto untouched backcountry peaks. This must be arranged via specialized Chinese touring agencies well in advance.
❓ Altay Skiing FAQ
Do the resorts rent English speaking instructors?
It is incredibly rare. The vast majority of ski instructors in Altay speak only Mandarin. If you are a beginner, Altay is likely not the place to learn unless you bring your own translator or are comfortable learning via translation apps.
Can I rent premium gear there?
Yes! Unlike a decade ago, both Jiangjun Mountain and Koktokay now feature massive, modern rental halls stocked with brand-new gear from Burton, Salomon, and Atomic. You don't necessarily have to drag your skis on the flight.
How do I get to Koktokay?
You can fly into Fuyun Airport (FYN) and take a 1-hour taxi to the resort town, or hire a private driver (Bao Che) from Altay City, which takes about 3.5 hours. Note that the final drive from the town up into the gorge requires a mandatory resort shuttle bus.
