2026 Transport Guide
Chengdu is built like a giant target, wrapped in massive concentric ring roads. ✈️ Crucial Warning: Do Not Mix Up The Airports
Chengdu has two international airports, and confusing them will make you miss your flight.
Shuangliu (CTU): The older, closer airport. Located about 30 mins from the city center via Metro Line 10.
Tianfu (TFU): The colossal, brand new mega airport. It is located roughly 50 kilometers outside the city. It takes 45 to 60+ minutes to reach via the ultra-fast Metro Line 18. Always double-check your departure code!

🚇 The Lifeline: Chengdu Metro
Forget the buses. The Metro is your absolute best friend in this city. It is immaculate, air-conditioned, and shockingly cheap.
| The Feature | What You Need to Know |
|---|---|
| English Signage | Every single sign, ticket machine, and stop announcement on the train is provided in perfectly clear English. You cannot get lost if you follow the color-coded signs. |
| How to Pay | Do not wait in line to buy physical plastic tokens. Open your Alipay app, tap "Transport," generate a Chengdu Metro QR code, and simply swipe your phone over the turnstile scanner. It deducts pennies from your home credit card. |
| The Crucial Lines |
Line 1 (Blue): The main North-South artery (avoid at rush hour). Line 3 (Magenta): Takes you straight to the Panda Base (Panda Avenue station) and Wuhou Shrine. |
| Security Checks | Every station has an airport-style bag scanner at the entrance. Place your backpack on the belt, walk through the metal detector, and grab your bag. Have any liquid bottles out—they may ask you to sip it. |
🚕 Taxis and DiDi (Rideshare)
Chengdu's ring roads are notorious for traffic jams between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. But for late-night hotpot runs, cars are essential.
!
Use the DiDi Mini-Program in Alipay
Do not bother trying to hail a physical green/yellow taxi on the street. Open Alipay, select the DiDi mini-program (the Chinese equivalent of Uber). The interface translates entirely into English. You type your destination in English, it auto-translates for the driver, and payment is handled automatically via the app. No cash, no language barrier.
🛡️ Safety & The "Silent Killers"
🛵
Dodge the Silent Scooters
Gasoline motorcycles are banned in the city center. Everyone rides electric scooters. Because they make zero noise, they will creep up right behind you in the bike lanes or even on the sidewalks. Never step backward without looking over your shoulder first.
🌃
Night Safety
Chengdu is one of the safest cities on earth. Violent crime against tourists is virtually non existent. You can comfortably walk back to your hotel from a club at 2:00 AM.
🕉️
Temple Etiquette
If you visit Wenshu Monastery or Qingyang Taoist Temple, remember these are active places of worship, not just tourist sites. Dress modestly (no short shorts or tank tops), do not take photos of monks praying, and avoid stepping on the wooden thresholds of doorways (step completely over them).

Apple Maps Works
Google Maps is notoriously outdated in China and requires a VPN. However, native Apple Maps partners directly with local Chinese map data. It works flawlessly without a VPN and provides incredibly accurate English Metro routing. (Android users should download Amap / Gaode Maps).
❓ Transport FAQ
What times should I absolutely avoid the Metro?
Avoid Line 1 at all costs between 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM, and 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM. Line 1 connects the residential north to the high-tech financial district in the south (Tianfu Software Park). The crush of commuters during these times is physically intense.
Can I figure out the buses without knowing Mandarin?
It is difficult. Unlike the Metro, bus stops rarely have English translations, and the automated voice announcements are entirely in Mandarin and local Sichuanese dialect. Stick to the Metro and DiDi to save yourself the stress.
Are there high-speed trains directly from the airport?
Yes. If you land at Tianfu Airport (TFU), there is a high-speed railway station located directly under the terminal, connecting you to other Sichuan cities without even needing to enter downtown Chengdu first.
