📱 Step 1: The Digital Prerequisites
Before you even look for a car, you must have your digital infrastructure set up. Western credit cards and Uber will not work here.
!
Setup WeChat & Alipay
Robotaxis in China do not have standalone apps for tourists in the western app stores. Instead, they live inside China's "Super Apps." You must download WeChat or Alipay on your phone.
Crucial Action: You must bind your foreign credit card (Visa/Mastercard) to the app's wallet "before" attempting to book a ride, and ensure you have a working internet connection (via an E-SIM like Holafly or local Wi-Fi).

🔍 Step 2: Finding the Mini-Program
The dominant player in Shenzhen for Robotaxis is Baidu's Apollo Go.
1️⃣
Open WeChat or Alipay
Open the search bar at the very top of either app.
2️⃣
Search "Apollo Go"
Type Apollo Go (or copy/paste the Chinese characters: 萝卜快跑). Select the "Mini-Program" that pops up with a smiling radish logo.
3️⃣
Allow Permissions
The app will ask for your location and phone number. Accept the terms. (WeChat/Alipay will auto-fill your registered number).
📍 Step 3: Setting Your Route (The "Virtual Station" Rule)
⚠️ The Golden Rule of Robotaxis
Unlike a human Uber driver, a robotaxi cannot drop a pin exactly where you are standing (like a random street corner). They operate on a network of hundreds of "Virtual Stations" (pre mapped safe pull over zones).
!
How to Book It:
- The map will show dozens of green dots (Virtual Stations) around you.
- Select the green dot nearest to your current location as your Pick-up Point.
- Select another green dot near your destination as your Drop-off Point.
- Confirm the ride. The app will tell you to walk to the designated pick up dot. Wait exactly there.
🚘 Step 4: Unlocking the Empty Car
The car has arrived. There is no driver. The doors are locked. Do not panic.
| Action Phase | What You Must Do |
|---|---|
| 1. Identify the Car | Check the license plate on the car against the license plate shown in your Apollo Go app to ensure it is yours. |
| 2. Unlock the Door | Look at the rear passenger window. There is a digital screen built into the glass. Use your Apollo Go app to scan the QR code on the window, OR type the last 4 digits of your phone number on the window's touchscreen. You will hear a "click", and the door handle will pop out. |
| 3. Get In & Buckle Up | Get in the back seat. The car will verbally warn you (and refuse to move) until your seatbelt is securely fastened. |
| 4. Start the Journey | Look at the iPad like screen mounted behind the front passenger seat. Tap the massive button that says "Start Journey". The steering wheel will spin, the indicator will click, and the car will pull into traffic entirely on its own. |
❓ Robotaxi FAQ for Foreigners
Where in Shenzhen can I ride these?
They are not available in every single alleyway yet. The highest concentration and easiest place to test an Apollo Go robotaxi is in the Nanshan District (the tech hub) or around Talent Park.
What happens if the car gets confused in traffic?
The cars are incredibly cautious, they will stop for jaywalkers, scooters, and erratic drivers. If the car gets completely stuck in an impossible traffic situation, a human operator in a remote control center will seamlessly take over the steering via 5G to guide it out. You are perfectly safe.
How do I pay at the end?
You don't need to do anything. When the car reaches the destination virtual station, it will park and the doors will unlock. You simply exit. The app will automatically deduct the incredibly cheap fare (often heavily subsidized, running under $2 USD) from your Alipay or WeChat account.
