Cycling the Emperors' Ramparts:
The Complete Guide to the Xi'an City Wall
The Xi'an City Wall is an architectural marvel. Built during the Ming Dynasty, it forms a massive 14 - kilometer rectangle around the historic heart of the city. While walking it is possible, cycling the cobblestone ramparts gives you an unmatched, breezy vantage point of the city. Here is your ultimate biking Xi'an City Wall guide.

🚪 The 18 Gate Dilemma: Where to Start?
The wall has 18 distinct gates, and tourists often get confused about where to actually ascend. Always choose the South Gate (Yongningmen). It is the grandest, most beautifully restored gate, sitting right on Metro Line 2 (Yongningmen Station). More importantly, the South Gate has the largest and most reliable bike rental station, and it remains open the latest (until 10:00 PM).
🚲 The Bike Rental Hustle
Once you pay your general admission to climb the wall (approx. ¥54 RMB), you must rent your bike at the kiosks located on the top of the ramparts.
| Rental Type | Cost (Approx.) | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Single Bicycle | ¥45 RMB for 3 Hours | The standard mountain bike. Be warned: the seats are hard, and the ancient cobblestones are extremely bumpy. |
| Tandem Bicycle (2-Person) | ¥90 RMB for 3 Hours | Highly popular for couples. It requires some coordination, but takes the pressure off a single rider. |
| Electric Golf Cart | ¥120 RMB per seat | If you cannot cycle, hop on an open-air electric tourist cart that drives the loop. (Less adventurous, but saves your legs). |
!
You Need Alipay for the Deposit
The bike rental kiosks require a security deposit (usually around ¥100 - ¥200 RMB per bike) to ensure you bring it back within the time limit. They do not want your physical cash. You must scan the QR code using Alipay or WeChat Pay. The deposit is instantly refunded to your app the second you return the bike to any of the 4 main gates.
🌅 Timing the Ride: The Sunset Hack
Cycling the wall at 1:00 PM in the summer is a terrible idea. There is zero shade, and the stone radiates heat.
!
Start Your Ride at 5:00 PM
The absolute best time to execute this activity is late afternoon. By starting at 5:00 PM (or 6:00 PM in peak summer), the heat breaks, and you catch the "Golden Hour." As you finish the back half of your 14km loop, the sun will set, and suddenly, thousands of red lanterns strung along the guardrails will click on simultaneously. Seeing the ancient illuminated Bell Tower in the center of the modern city skyline from the wall at dusk is the best photo opportunity in Xi'an.
🎒 Essential Wall Survival Tips
🪨
Beware the Cobblestones
The wall is paved with highly uneven ancient bricks. After 14 kilometers, the intense vibration takes a toll on your wrists and seat. Do not try to race the loop. Take it slow, stand on your pedals over the rough patches, and take frequent breaks.
💧
Hydration Stations
There are small convenience kiosks built into the watchtowers along the route selling cold water, sports drinks, and ice cream. You do not need to carry a heavy backpack full of water, just bring your phone to scan the Alipay codes.
🔄
It is One - Way Traffic
Even though the wall is as wide as a massive highway (wide enough for ancient chariots), cyclists must follow a counter-clockwise flow. Do not turn around and ride into oncoming bike traffic if you drop something.
🎫
Pre Book Your Entry Ticket
During peak holidays, the line to buy an entry ticket at the base of the South Gate can take an hour. Pre-book your entry ticket on Trip.com. You bypass the ticket booth entirely and just scan the QR code on your phone at the stairs.
❓ Wall Cycling FAQ
Do I have to return the bike to the gate I started at?
No! That is the beauty of the system. You can rent a bike at the South Gate, cycle half the wall (approx 7km), and return the bike at the North Gate kiosk. Your deposit will still be refunded through Alipay. Just make sure you return it before the smaller gates close for the evening.
Can I bring my own rented city bike up the stairs?
No. You cannot carry the shared yellow/blue street bikes (like Hellobike or Meituan) up onto the historical wall. You must use the official mountain bikes provided by the wall authority.
Are there bathrooms on top of the wall?
Yes. There are incredibly clean, modern public restrooms located near all four of the major directional gates (North, South, East, West).
