Surviving the Clay Army:
The DIY Guide to the Terracotta Warriors
The Terracotta Army is one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in human history. But navigating the 40 kilometer journey from downtown Xi'an, dealing with aggressive tour touts, and battling thousands of tourists can ruin the magic. You do not need an overpriced tour group. Here is your step by step masterclass to doing it yourself.

🎫 Crucial Warning: No Cash at the Gate
The days of walking up to a ticket booth with paper RMB are over. The museum enforces a strict daily visitor cap, and tickets sell out days in advance during peak season. You must pre book your digital ticket. Use the Trip.com app to book in English. Your passport is your literal ticket, you simply hand it to the guard at the turnstile, they scan the passport barcode, and the gates open.
🚇 Step 1: Navigating the Transit
Do not pay $40 USD for a private taxi. The new Xi'an Metro extension makes this journey incredibly cheap and foolproof.
| The Step | How to Execute It |
|---|---|
| 1. Metro Line 1 → Line 9 | From downtown Xi'an (like the Bell Tower), get onto Metro Line 1 (heading East). Transfer to the brand new Metro Line 9 at Fangzhicheng Station. |
| 2. Exit at Huaqing Pool | Take Line 9 all the way to Huaqing Pool Station (华清池) and take Exit C. The entire Metro ride will cost you less than $1 USD. |
| 3. The Tourist Shuttle | Directly outside Exit C, you will see a fleet of official white and green shuttle buses labeled "Terracotta Army" (Lintong Bus 613 or Tourist Bus 5). Tap your Alipay QR code for a ¥5 RMB ride straight to the museum entrance. |
🗺️ Step 2: The Secret Viewing Order
The museum complex consists of three main excavation pits. If you walk into Pit 1 first, you will completely ruin the experience.
1
Start with Pit 2 (The Excavation)
Most of Pit 2 is still unexcavated, meaning it looks like a dark, rolling dirt field. However, it is essential to start here because this hall houses the glass display cases of individual, fully-restored warriors (including the famous Kneeling Archer). It allows you to see the astonishing, individualized facial features up close before viewing the army as a whole.
2
Move to Pit 3 (The Command Center)
This is the smallest pit. It served as the command post for the army, featuring high-ranking officers and a horse-drawn chariot. By doing Pit 2 and Pit 3 first, you build anticipation and context for what is to come.
3
Finish with Pit 1 (The Grand Reveal)
This is it. The hangar is the size of an airplane terminal. As you walk through the front doors, you are instantly greeted by over 2,000 fully restored, life sized clay soldiers standing in perfect battle formation. The sheer scale is breathtaking. Saving this for last ensures the ultimate crescendo to your DIY tour.
🛑 Step 3: Dodging the Tourist Traps
🗣️
The "Fake Warrior" Touts
When you get off the bus, independent "guides" will aggressively offer to show you a "secret 4th pit" or a "special factory." Ignore them. They are trying to funnel you into commercial souvenir factories that produce fake clay statues. Walk straight to the official main gate.
🛍️
The Exit Labyrinth
Getting out of the museum is notoriously annoying. They force you to walk through a 1.5 kilometer maze of commercial stalls selling jade, fake fur, and persimmons before you reach the parking lot. Keep your head down, politely say "Bu yao" (I don't want it), and keep walking.
❓ Masterclass FAQ
Do I need to hire an English guide?
No. You can rent an official English audio guide headset at the entrance for about ¥40 RMB ($6 USD). The plaques inside the pits are also heavily translated into English. Doing it solo allows you to go at your own pace.
What time should I arrive?
The museum opens at 8:30 AM. Try to arrive by 8:45 AM. By 11:00 AM, the massive domestic tour groups arrive, and you will be fighting shoulder-to-shoulder just to see over the railings.
Can I take photos?
Yes! Photography is highly encouraged, but flash is strictly prohibited. The flash damages the ancient pigments on the clay.
